Business Feasibility Training Series

Business feasibility is a critical step on the path to self-employment. In the Core Self-Employment Concepts Series, Module 3 - Business Feasibility provides an overview of business feasibility. We encourage you to complete that module before completing the modules in this series.

The modules in this series explain how you can support a VR customer in completing a business feasibility. Module 1 will show how you and the VR customer can use business feasibility to determine if the business concept goal is a good fit for them. Module 2 will show you how you and the VR customer can use business feasibility to determine if the business concept is likely to succeed. Module 3 pulls it together by walking you through a business feasibility case study.

Counselors are encouraged to complete all the modules but have the option to complete the one they need the most.

Time: 1 hour per module (average)

CRCs: Up to 3 CRCs (1 per module)

Module 1: Reviewing Person-Centered Business Feasibility

A traditional business feasibility study is focused almost entirely on the business concept and whether it has the potential to fly. While that determination is important, for VR customers two additional components should be explored during business feasibility: Does the business concept fit the VR customer? Will the VR customer have the support they need to succeed? We call these components person-centered feasibility. This module will provide strategies for how you can support a VR customer in using the business feasibility process to consider if the business concept is feasible for them.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the concept of person-centered feasibility.
  2. Describe considerations that can help determine if a business concept fits a person.
  3. Identify the type of support a person would need to be self-employed.

Module 2: Reviewing Financial Feasibility

Business feasibility is a critical step on the path to self-employment. Through the business feasibility step, the VR customer can determine whether there is a strong indication that the business will succeed and bring the VR customer an income that meets their financial needs. Vocational rehabilitation counselors are often unsure how to review the financial component of a business feasibility. In this module, you'll learn how to review that component to help a VR customer determine if a business is likely to fly.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the financial information required for the business feasibility phase.
  2. Identify when a business shows promise for financial feasibility (and when it doesn't).
  3. Identify strategies for improving business financial projections.
